deceived
by means of misleading reasoning we need to recognize the
common
mistakes of reasoning
called
fallacies
.
Fallacies
are
bad arguments
that may be
mistaken for good arguments.
Fallacies can have
weak
inductive argument forms or
invalid
deductive argument forms, but may also be found in arguments that are
not cogent
or
not
sound
.
On the other hand, there are many other ways people accept conclusions for the wrong
reasons.
For instance, reasons that are unacceptable, irrelevant, or insufficient do not
adequately support the conclusion of an argument.
This suggests that a fallacy is committed
when an argument under consideration does not justify accepting its conclusion.
This happens
when the premise or premises do not adequately support the conclusion.
This means that the
reason or reasons provided as evidence for the conclusion are inadequate for accepting the
conclusion.

PART I: BAD INDUCTIVE ARGUMENTS
Great INDUCTIVE Fallacy #1: The Fallacy of Generalizing from Incomplete
Information (The problem of overgeneralizing):
The
Fallacy of Generalizing from Incomplete Information
is
a bad argument form
because one is reaching a conclusion from very little or weak evidence.
To minimize this
problem associated with induction, we need to do the following.

We learned from a previous section that when we generalize from one or more specific examples
in support of a sweeping statement (or generalization) we obtain an

Generalizing from Incomplete Information

We also addressed the question about how many examples are necessary.
We said that this
depends partly on the size of the set of examples in support of the sweeping statement (or
generalization). If the size of the set of examples is small, for the inductive argument to
be
properly formed
one must consider all, or the majority of, the examples. How many
examples are necessary also depends partly on their representativeness.

of examples is too large to list, for the inductive argument to be
